The Medals and Awards Committee

The Medals and Awards Committee of the Philadelphia-Continental Chapter exists for the purpose of recognizing individuals who have assisted the Sons of the American Revolution on the local, state and national levels in promoting patriotism and working to support the purposes for which our Society was founded. These individuals include both SAR Compatriots as well as citizens-at-large. Award recipients are chosen upon recommendations of Chapter members and suggestions from the community. One of our most extensive projects is recognition of deserving ROTC and JROTC cadets in approximately eighteen Pennsylvania colleges and secondary schools in the Delaware Valley area.
The Society's most prestigious awards are the Gold Good Citizenship medal (given in 1999 to Philadelphia Mayor Edward Rendell, in recognition of his assistance in restoring Washington Square, and given in 2000 to U. S. Congressman Curt Weldon, in recognition of his assistance in preserving the Paoli Battlefield,) and the Silver Good Citizenship medal (given in 1999 to Rear Admiral Virgil L. Hill, Jr., Commandant of Valley Forge Military Academy and College.)
Other recipients of Chapter awards have included: LTC Denny Shupe, Esq., volunteer with the U.S.O. of Philadelphia, and William C. Kenny, Scoutmaster of Rosemont B.S.A. Troop 652 (Bronze Good Citizenship medal,) and teachers Sister Eileen Regina of Little Flower High School and James Baxter, Jr., of Upper Merion High School (Outstanding American History Teacher Award.) Other awards are Flag Certificates (for flying the American flag in the proper manner,) Law Enforcement and Fire Safety Commendation medals, and Heroism medals.
